Understanding the Basics of a CD-R

CD-R and External Drive Since their introduction in the early 1980s, compact discs have been a smash hit with consumers and retailers all over the world. The recent boom in home CD recorders is allowing the average consumer to produce professional discs with ease. From aspiring musicians to upstart software developers, there are a variety of uses for CD recorders at home and in the workplace. Let’s take a moment to discuss the basics of CD-R media and CD Recorders and perhaps dispel some of the myths associated with them.

Aliases:
1) CD-Recorder     2) CD-Writer     2) CD-Burner

Media:
1)CD-R, Compact Disc-Recordable: Can be written once
2)CD-RW, Compact Disc-ReWritable: Can be written and erased over and over

What does a CD Writer Do?
A CD-Writer is a drive that allows you to record to a CD-R or CD-RW

What kind of information can I record on a CD-R?
Any of the following components or any combination of these components:
1) Data     2) Digital Audio

How much information can I store on a CD-R?
Maximum Storage Capacity:
    1) 700 Megabytes of Data
    2) 80 Minutes of Digital Audio

Can I mix data with Digital Audio?
Yes. Data and Audio can both be burned onto a single disc, but many Audio CD players will not recognize discs that are mixed mode.

Can I write the information to my CD-R in separate increments?
There are ways of writing information in different increments, this is known as Multi-Session, but it is not recommended because many CD-ROM drives do not support Multi-Session CDs.

For inexpensive and reliable data storage and retrieval, compact discs are one of the most versatile options on the market today. This is a trend that will surely continue as manufacturers continue to innovate and prices continue to fall.
